Minn. board won’t probe Rybak over GOP complaint

Minnesota regulators have declined to investigate a Republican complaint accusing Democratic gubernatorial candidate R.T. Rybak of illegal campaign spending.

State campaign finance board director Gary Goldsmith says there’s not enough to the complaint to show a violation of state campaign finance laws.

Rybak’s campaign released a letter from Goldsmith to Rybak’s attorney. Goldsmith confirmed the letter.

Republicans accused Rybak of using mayoral campaign funds last year to buy a statewide voter file for his gubernatorial campaign. Rybak’s campaign has said both his mayoral and gubernatorial campaigns separately bought the voter file from the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.

GOP spokesman Mark Drake says the party is working to gather more information and submit the complaint for another look.

The Minneapolis mayor is one of 13 Democrats in a wide-open governor’s race.
